Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you may want to know before choosing a piece, giving one, or living with it over time.

About SaraGaia

What is SaraGaia?

SaraGaia creates sculptural porcelain drinkware for everyday life. Each piece is made to be used - for coffee, tea, water, wine, or whatever becomes part of your ritual - while carrying the presence, material character, and individuality of an art object.

We work with mineral-led glazes and the changing conditions of fire, so no two surfaces unfold in exactly the same way. The result is not porcelain made to look identical; it is a piece made to become more personal through use.

What does “On Nature’s Terms” mean?

It is the belief behind SaraGaia. We do not ask natural materials, flame, or the hand to behave like an industrial system. We guide the process carefully, while allowing the material to retain the variations that make it alive.

For you, this means owning a piece with its own surface, depth, and character - made for real use, not for sameness.

Where are SaraGaia pieces made?

SaraGaia pieces are made in Jingdezhen, China - a city with a long porcelain-making tradition. We work from this living craft environment while making pieces for contemporary homes, tables, and everyday rituals.

Are all pieces exactly the same?

No. Variations in glaze movement, tone, texture, and small marks are part of the material process. They are not defects when they do not affect safe, intended use.

Product photographs show the intended character of a glaze or form. The piece you receive will be recognisably within that character, while remaining its own individual object.

Materials, Glaze & Making

What makes SaraGaia glazes different?

Our glazes are developed around mineral character rather than flat, uniform colour. The final surface is shaped by the relationship between the glaze, the form, the kiln atmosphere, and the fire.

That is why a SaraGaia surface may reveal depth, shifts in tone, crystalline movement, or a softer edge where the glaze gathers. It is material expression, not printed decoration.

Why may the glaze differ slightly from the product photos?

Glaze is responsive. Even within the same glaze family, firing conditions can create gentle differences in colour, pooling, texture, and movement.

We photograph each collection to show its intended visual world. Individual variation is part of receiving a piece made through a material process rather than a fully standardised finish.

Are the glazes food-safe?

SaraGaia drinkware is made for its intended everyday use. Please follow the care guidance provided with your piece and on the product page.

For material or safety information relating to a specific product, please refer to the product page or contact us before purchasing.

Is every piece handmade?

SaraGaia pieces are shaped through a hands-on porcelain process, with material and surface decisions made through making and firing. Depending on the form, certain production steps may use tools or moulds for consistency; the finished piece still carries the variation created by glaze, hand-finishing, and fire.

We describe each product as precisely as possible on its product page.

Is this a decorative object or a cup I can really use?

Both. SaraGaia makes functional art: pieces created to be present in your space and fully part of your life. They are designed for drinking, serving, holding, and returning to - not for being kept behind glass.

Why is each piece not identical?

Because porcelain, glaze, and fire do not repeat themselves perfectly. We see that as part of the point. A piece becomes more meaningful when it has a character of its own and, with time, becomes associated with the person who uses it.

Care & Long-Term Use

How should I care for my SaraGaia piece?

Hand washing with mild soap and water is recommended to help preserve the surface over time. Dry thoroughly after washing and avoid sudden, extreme changes in temperature.

For any product-specific care instructions, please refer to the product page or the care information included with your order.

Will the surface change with use?

Over time, a handmade glazed surface may develop subtle signs of use. This can be part of the relationship between the piece and your everyday life.

If you have a concern about a specific mark, crack, or change in the surface, please contact us with clear photographs so we can help assess it.

Can I put my piece in the dishwasher or microwave?

Please follow the care guidance shown on the relevant product page. Where no specific guidance is shown, we recommend hand washing and avoiding sudden temperature changes to protect the piece over time.

Gifting & Packaging

Can I send a SaraGaia order directly to the recipient?

Yes. You may enter the recipient’s shipping address at checkout. Product price tags and packing slips showing prices are not placed inside the gift package.

Order and payment details are sent to the purchaser by email.

Can I include a handwritten gift card?

Yes. Add your message in the gift-message or order-note field at checkout, and we will include it in a handwritten card for the recipient.

Please keep the message concise so it can be written clearly by hand.

How is a SaraGaia gift presented?

Each piece is prepared to feel considered from the moment it is opened. The presentation is designed to protect the porcelain in transit and to make the unboxing experience ready for gifting.

Our boxes are made to be kept and repurposed after the gift is opened.

Which piece should I choose as a gift?

Start with the person and the gesture. A single piece can mark a personal moment; a pair can be chosen for two people or a shared ritual; a larger set can become part of a home, a table, or a meaningful occasion.

Visit our Gift Guide for recommendations by relationship, occasion, and set size. If you are unsure, contact us before ordering and tell us who the gift is for.
